Life in the Dominican Republic: Beaches, Golf, Culture and Everyday Living

by Juan Aracena

The Dominican Republic offers two very different ways to live: a resort lifestyle on the east coast, and the history and energy of Santo Domingo. Many New Yorkers know it from family visits, and many are now making it a second home.

Punta Cana and the east coast

Punta Cana, Cap Cana and Bávaro have long white-sand beaches, marinas and golf courses designed by well-known architects. Many communities are gated and offer security, clubs and on-site services. Villas near the golf courses and lakes give you space, pools and year-round warm weather.

Santo Domingo: culture and city life

Santo Domingo is the country's capital and one of the oldest cities in the Americas. The Colonial Zone has cobblestone streets, historic churches, plazas and cafés, while modern districts offer restaurants, shopping and high-rise apartments. It suits buyers who want city energy and a strong local culture.

Food, music and community

Dominican life revolves around family, music and food: mofongo, sancocho, fresh seafood and tropical fruit, with merengue and bachata at the neighborhood bar. English and Spanish are both useful, and many communities have a large international population.

Outdoors and activities

Golf, fishing, snorkeling, kitesurfing and boat days are part of normal weekends. The mountains in the interior offer hiking and a cooler climate. Most of the country is warm all year, with a rainy season and a hurricane season, so ask about building standards when you shop.

Making the move

Buyers use the DR as a vacation home, an income property, or a retirement base. Read our step-by-step guide to buying property in the Dominican Republic from New York, and work with your own local attorney.
