Life in New York City: Neighborhoods, Culture and the Rhythm of the Day

by Juan Aracena

People move to New York for the energy, and then stay for the small routines: the corner bakery, the walk through the park, the neighbor who knows your name. The city feels enormous, but most people live in a handful of blocks that feel like a village.

Neighborhoods have their own personalities

The Upper West Side is known for its brownstones, Central Park and Riverside Park, and a family-friendly pace. The Upper East Side is polished and quiet, with museums along Fifth Avenue and a classic prewar feel. SoHo and Tribeca offer cast-iron lofts, boutiques and galleries. Midtown East and Sutton Place suit people who want quiet streets close to the office and the river. Spend a weekend in a neighborhood before you decide, because the same price can buy very different lifestyles.

Food, culture and green space

You can eat dinner from almost any country within a few blocks, see a Broadway show or a small jazz set the same week, and spend a Sunday morning at a farmers' market. Central Park, Riverside Park and the Hudson River waterfront give you room to run, bike or read outside without leaving the city.

Getting around

Most New Yorkers walk, ride the subway or take a bus. Many never own a car. That changes your budget and your day: you trade a garage for a short walk and a metrocard. If you do want a car, factor in parking and garage fees when you compare homes.

Apartment living, up close

Space is the trade-off. Look for what matters to you: a doorman, a laundry room, outdoor space, or a building with a gym. Co-ops and condos work differently, so read our guide on co-op versus condo before you start touring.

Who loves living here

  • Professionals who want a short commute and a lively evening life
  • Families who value museums, parks and diverse schools
